This Is a Book is a book. It contains a series of monotypes that combine relief and pressure printing to transform the text over the course of the book.

It has a case paper cover and a historical long stitch binding.

This Is a Book is a replica, of sorts, of the first edition of Della Scienza Mecanica by Galileo Galilei held at University of Iowa Libraries.

The matrices for this book were cut from PVC slab using a waterjet.

The shapes in the book, boring and repetitive at first, slowly change position and color. Changes are slight at first, but wild and unrestrained by the end.

This Is a Book is part of the artist book collection at University of Iowa Libraries Special Collections. It is publicly available for viewing at the main library's special collections reading room.
